CT Angiography
Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA) is a patient-friendly procedure that allows physicians to visualize blood flow in veins and arteries throughout the body without requiring a hospital admission. Traditional catheter angiography is an invasive procedure that involves injecting contrast material and placing a sizable catheter into a large artery or vein. Instead, CTA uses a rotating device that passes x-ray beams through the area of interest from several different angles to create cross-sectional images. These images are assembled by computer into a three-dimensional picture of the area being studied.
CTA is commonly used to screen patients for arterial disease, aneurysms, thrombosis and other malformations of the blood vessels. It is also used to detect narrowing or obstruction of arteries in the kidneys, brain and other organs, and to map the structure of blood vessels feeding benign and malignant tumors. |
