Positron Emission Tomography (PET)

Positron Emission Tomography is a unique imaging modality that is capable of detecting certain diseases at an early state. When combined with computer aided tomography (CT), it becomes an even more powerful diagnostic tool, providing information that can help plan and manage your care, determine therapy and follow your progress. It is especially useful in locating and measuring tumor growth, determining heart muscle viability and diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, stroke, brain tumors and seizures.

The procedure takes somewhat longer than either exam alone (most patients can expect to be in our office a total of about 2.5 hours) but it is completely safe and painless. You may bring your favorite relaxing music to enjoy on our CD players during both the resting period and scanning time.

After you receive an injection of a trace substance, you will relax for an hour while it is distributed throughout your body. You will then be asked to lie still on the scan table for 40-90 minutes while the PET scanner acquires the images. After the PET scan, you will go to the CAT department for a very quick scan. A technologist will process the combined data and a board certified radiologist will interpret the results and report to your referring physician on both organ structure and function.

PET is utilized in:
• Oncology to determine the location and extent ofg
   tumor growth.
• Neurology to aid in diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease,
dementia, stroke, brain tumors and seizures.
• Cardiology to determine the viability of the heart
   muscle.
